What is Migraine Aura?

Migraine aura is a group of symptoms that temporarily affect your nervous system – most often involving your vision or other senses – and usually happens before the headache phase of migraine starts.

Migraine aura symptoms include :

Aura symptoms usually begin gradually and may continue for up to an hour.
You can experience more than one aura symptom – either at the same time or in succession.

Problems such as seeing zigzag lines, flashing lights, or having difficulty focusing or blind spots
Ringing in your ears
Difficulty talking or finding the right words
Tingling or numbness sensations usually in your hands, arms or face – and generally one-sided.

Prodrome phase
(also called the preheadache or premonitory phase) – which marks the start of the migraine and where you may notice early warming symptoms. This phase may last from a few hours to a few days.
Aura phase
5 – 60 mins
not everyone will experience aura symptoms, but those that do usually find their vision affected. This phase usually lasts from a few minutes up to an hour.
Headache phase
4 – 72 hours
Most people will experience a headache that can last between 4 hours and up to 72 hours.
Recovery or postdrome phase
Which varies from person to person and lasts for about 24 hours.
